How To Define & Implement A CMDB According To ITIL v3 Best Practices

This two-day course focuses on Service Asset & Configuration Management – one of the most necessary but difficult processes to implement if you want to achieve a high level of maturity in IT Service Management (ITSM). Additionally, the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) provides a critical resource for almost all other ITSM disciplines. If implemented and managed correctly, the CMDB will provide valuable information about where assets are and how they impact the delivery and quality of IT services. However, there are many obstacles to negotiate and pitfalls to avoid, so good guidance is essential before you attempt this most important project.

The agenda for this course is tailored to meet your needs, but can include topics such as:

  • Learn how to create a CMDB
  • Learn the critical success factors for defining, building, deploying and managing a best practice CMDB
  • Receive numerous take-aways including:
    • A useful “data model” template and example
    • RACI matrix showing roles and responsibilities
    • Job descriptions to support the RACI matrix
    • Example project plan for creating a CMDB
    • Checklist of mandatory and desirable criteria to help select the most appropriate tools to support your CMDB

CMDB Design Considerations:

  • The differences between Service Asset & Configuration Management theory and reality
  • Why Service Asset & Configuration Management and the CMDB need to be integrated with other key disciplines in ITSM
  • Service Asset & Configuration Management’s dependency on Change Management
  • How the CMDB relates to the Service Catalog, Financial Costing, IT governance and Risk Management
  • How to define “IT services”
  • How to define and build a “data model” for the CMDB
  • Good service object modeling design techniques

CMDB Design Considerations:

  • How to identify the right tools to enable Service Asset & Configuration Management
  • Technology architecture considerations and integrations
  • Data collection and normalization methods
  • How to define the critical roles, responsibilities and job descriptions necessary for managing and working with the CMDB (Process Owner, Manager, Distributed Coordinators)
  • Understand the dangers of people resisting change; techniques for embedding changes to working practices and validating that they are being followed
  • How to build and manage a project plan for creating a CMDB; the Project Charter; scope considerations; data migration techniques; building a high level project timeline
